New Introductions
2008 · 2007
2007 marks a momentous occasion for Cates Family Glads. This year, for the first time, we are announcing the introduction of a brand-new gladiolus variety. Cates Family Glads' very first new glad introduction is Dorothy S., an unusual double glad developed by hybridizer Robert Martin of Belgrade, Maine and named after his wife, Dorothy.
This unique 300-size glad blooms in the midseason with multiple petals of blush pink and cream on each blossom growing on a sturdy, straight stem at a height of 40-50 inches. There are no known parents of Dorothy S. as the glad appeared as a single corm in a collection of named varieties and unnamed seedlings. Dorothy S. could be a sport or a mutation of a named variety. The extra petals on this variety originate at the base of the many pistils on each floret. No stamen has been observed on Dorothy S. Because of this, Bob Martin has been unable to pollinate and set seed on this variety. Customers at Bob's roadside stand are able to select individual glads and will always choose stems of Dorothy S. if it is present on the table. Its distinctive double floret makes it stand out in gardens; it's a must for both bouquets and arrangements.
Cates Family Glads is proud to introduce Bob Martin's Dorothy S. for the 2007 bulb sales season. Bulbs of this unique novelty glad variety are available at a price of $6 each. Congratulations to Bob Martin for discovering such a rare specimen of floral beauty. ![]() Dorothy S., 2007
