New Introductions
This year, Cates Family Glads is privileged to bring you one brand-new, never-before released glad variety from hybridizer Cliff Hartline.
SMOKY MOUNTAIN
495 M Hartline 2012
At the 2006 Maine Gladiolus Society exhibition, Paul was doing his best to get Cates Family Glads' entries ready before the 12 noon deadline when Elisabeth told him, “Bob Martin has a glad he wants you to see.”
They found Bob in front of a show table, and before him stood a glad which was mind-blowing! It was a medium to deep lavender smoky with red streaks like flames rising through the smoke. Its floret substance and placement, ruffling, color, flower head, length, and all-around beauty made it perfect for show.
Bob, the grower of this All-America candidate whose parentage includes Lady Lucille and an unnamed red, stood aside during deliberation, when it was made clear that his glad was in the running to become the show’s grand champion -- and Paul informed him that his smoky was far and away the best in show.
Paul won't say that this is Cliff Hartline’s best creation. He will say that it’s his favorite, and what a pleasure it is for the Cates family to introduce this glad!
We are offering large and medium bulbs of Smoky Mountain for $6.00 each. Please see the photo of the variety at left, taken by the late Bob Martin.
New or returning to our listing
This year we are "re-releasing" several heirloom gladiolus varieties. We have built up enough stock in these varieties that we are able to make bulbs available for sale. Heirloom varieties which are new or returning to our listing for 2012 include the following:
GOLDEN STAR 416 E Baerman 1961
Our best early deep yellow -- remarkable for a 50+ year-old cultivar.
KING SOLOMON 466 EM Bevington 1966
A tall, informal medium to dark "gem tone" purple.
NACARAT 424 M Summerville 1983
A tall, ruffled glad in the "orangest" orange.
SNOW CASTLE 200 M Walker 1982
One of the best white miniatures.
TOP BRASS 416 L Baerman 1960
A tall, ruffled, deep yellow glad.
